Falklands Row: UK Rejects Trump-linked Review Proposal

The United Kingdom has pushed back strongly against Donald Trump following reports that the United States is considering reviewing Britain’s claim to the Falkland Islands over London’s reluctance to support Washington’s position on the war in Iran.

In a statement, Downing Street made its stance clear, declaring that “sovereignty rests with us” after a US official suggested reassessing Washington’s diplomatic backing for European “imperial possessions,” including the Falklands.

A spokesperson for Number 10 said, “We could not be clearer about the UK’s position on the Falklands. It’s longstanding, it’s unchanged. Sovereignty rests with the UK and self-determination is paramount.”

The controversy followed a leaked internal Pentagon communication proposing measures to penalise NATO allies seen as uncooperative. Among the suggestions were a review of US support for Britain’s claim to the islands, the possible suspension of Spain from NATO, and excluding “difficult” countries from key positions within the alliance.

Tensions came amid escalating US military activity in the Middle East. The US military has confirmed that a third aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, has entered the region as Washington intensifies pressure on Tehran to agree to a peace deal on its terms.

Trump said Iran may have used a recent ceasefire period to bolster its military capacity “a little bit,” but insisted that US forces could neutralise those capabilities “in about one day.” He also ruled out the use of nuclear weapons in any potential escalation.

Reacting to the reports, former Royal Navy chief Alan West described the suggestion of a US review as an “insult” to the people of the Falklands.

“How dare they?” he said, while emphasising that any withdrawal of US recognition would have no practical impact on the islands’ security. “The recognition or otherwise by the US does not make the islands less secure,” he added.
