Gunmen invaded Olegabulu village in Agatu local government area of Benue State and murdered the traditional ruler in the community, his wife and three other residents late Thursday, our correspondent gathered yesterday.

Chairman of Agatu local government area, Melvin Ejeh, who confirmed the incident but did not state the casualty figures, said, “Security agencies have been mobilised, and investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for this heinous act.”

He did not say who was responsible for the killings.

The member representing Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency and chairman, House Committee on National Inland Waterways, Ojotu Ojema, condemned the attack.

Ojema stated that among those killed were the traditional ruler of Olegabulu, His Royal Highness, Chief Momo Alexander Awodi, his wife, Abigail Awodi and others.

A statement issued by the media aide to House of Representatives member, Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency, Olikita Ekani said yesterday described the attack as barbaric, senseless and unacceptable, stressing that no society can thrive under the persistent threat of violence and impunity.

He sent condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Olegabulu, assuring them of his unwavering solidarity during this difficult time.

The lawmaker called on security agencies to act swiftly in apprehending the perpetrators and ensuring that justice is served without delay.

He further urged the federal government to intensify efforts toward strengthening security architecture in rural communities, particularly in areas that have become recurring targets of such attacks.

Ojema reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with relevant authorities to ensure the protection of lives and property across Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency.

Ojema also appealed for calm, urging residents not to resort to self-help but to continue to support lawful measures aimed at restoring lasting peace in the area.

Benue State police command’s spokesperson, DSP Edet Udeme, when contacted on telephone, promised to get back with details of the incident.
