The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has elected Mr Peter Azubuike as its new state chairman following its State Congress held in Umuahia on Saturday.

Azubuike emerged through a consensus arrangement adopted by delegates at the congress, alongside other members of the State Working Committee. Those elected include Mr Chucks Akamadu as state secretary, Ben Otti as organising secretary, and Mr Emenike Iroegbu as publicity secretary.

Governor Alex Otti, who addressed party members shortly after the exercise, commended the peaceful and organised conduct of the congress. He described the process as a sign of unity within the party and a step toward a more coordinated political direction.

He noted that the era of internal divisions was over, stressing that party members must now work together with a shared purpose. The governor also assured the new leadership of his continued support, emphasising the importance of a smooth transition and effective take-off for the incoming executives.

Otti further praised the immediate past acting state chairman, Emmanuel Otti, for guiding the party through a challenging period leading up to the congress. He encouraged him to remain active within the party, hinting at future responsibilities.

In his acceptance speech, Azubuike pledged to strengthen and unify the party across the state. He expressed appreciation to party leaders for the confidence reposed in him and promised to build on the party’s existing momentum.

He also highlighted plans to leverage Governor Otti’s popularity to secure electoral victories for the Labour Party in Abia State in the 2027 general elections.
