Imumolen-Led Accord Party Rejects Ibadan Summit, Issues 48-Hour Ultimatum On Use Of Its Identity

The Accord Party, led by its factional National Chairman Chris Imumolen, has distanced itself from the opposition party gathering in Ibadan last Saturday, describing the use of its identity as unauthorised and misleading.

In a statement signed by the party’s National Secretary, Muktar Abdallah, the Accord Party demanded immediate clarification from key political figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and Seyi Makinde, as well as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), over what it called the “unauthorized use” of its name and symbol.

Recall that the Accord party is locked in a leadership tussle, between camps led by Chris Imumolen and Maxwell Mgbudem.

However in the statement on Sunday, the Imumolen-led camp described the development at the opposition summit as a deliberate act rather than an error. “This is not an oversight; it is a misrepresentation. The Accord Party will not be dragged into alliances it neither negotiated nor approved,” he said.

He stated that the party is not part of any coalition involving the ADC, PDP, or any aligned bloc, emphasising that it never granted permission for its inclusion in the Ibadan gathering.

The party further warned that the incident raises serious concerns about the integrity of the coalition itself. According to the statement, reliance on the identity of parties not involved calls into question the transparency and credibility of the initiative.

Reaffirming its political independence, the Accord Party said it remains focused on the 2027 general elections and intends to field its own presidential candidate rather than participate in what it described as a hastily assembled alliance.

Prof. Imumolen also issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the conveners and participants of the Ibadan meeting to publicly explain the circumstances surrounding the use of the party’s identity.

“You cannot borrow legitimacy by force. Those responsible must either explain themselves or prepare to defend their actions in court,” he warned.

The party added that failure to provide a satisfactory explanation within the stipulated timeframe would result in immediate legal action against all individuals and groups involved.

It stressed that it would “vigorously protect its identity, structure, and political independence,” warning against any attempt—subtle or otherwise—to appropriate its platform for political convenience.

Accord Party maintained that it would engage Nigerians on its own terms, distancing itself from what it described as “manufactured alignments or backdoor coalitions.”
