Chelsea have secured their place in the FA Cup final for the first time since 2022, overcoming a resilient Leeds United 1-0 in a high-octane semi-final clash that required every ounce of the Blues’ defensive resolve.
A 23rd-minute header from Enzo Fernández proved to be the decisive blow in a match defined by tactical discipline, a flurry of yellow cards, and a standout performance from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez.
Chelsea started with intent, nearly breaking the deadlock in the 21st minute when João Pedro rattled the left post from a tight angle after being threaded through by Fernández. The disappointment didn’t last long.
Just two minutes later, Pedro Neto delivered a pinpoint cross into the heart of the box. Fernández, ghosting between the Leeds center-backs, met the ball with a clinical header into the bottom left corner. A brief VAR check for a potential infringement followed, but the goal stood, sending the Chelsea faithful into raptures.
Leeds, far from overawed by the occasion, grew into the game as the first half progressed. Noah Okafor and Brenden Aaronson both tested the Chelsea backline, but it was Sánchez who kept the Blues in the lead.
Just before the break, the Spaniard produced a vital save from an Anton Stach long-range effort. He was called into action again early in the second half, remarkably tipping a Dominic Calvert-Lewin header over the bar in the 58th minute to deny the Yorkshire side an equalizer.
The second half devolved into a physical scrap as Leeds threw everything forward. Refereeing duties were kept busy, with no fewer than seven yellow cards brandished in a frantic final 30 minutes.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca looked to freshen his side, introducing Andrey Santos and later Cole Palmer to help retain possession. However, the closing stages were marred by injuries, with Moisés Caicedo and Santos both requiring treatment, leading to a nerve-shredding ten minutes of added time.
Leeds’ best late chance fell to Stach, whose speculative effort from distance flew just over the bar, while Palmer nearly doubled the lead on a late counter-attack, missing narrowly from 35 yards out.
