Marseille Manager Issues ‘Wake-Up’ Call To Nwaneri

Marseille manager Habib Beye has issued a firm wake-up call to teenage midfielder Ethan Nwaneri, warning that natural ability must be backed by daily grit and defensive discipline if he is to break into the starting eleven.

The English youth international was left unused on the bench for the full 90 minutes of Sunday’s clash against Nice—a decision Beye has now explained in stark terms.

Speaking on the club’s official website, Beye did not hide his admiration for Nwaneri’s raw talent, calling him “a quality player.” However, the manager quickly pivoted to what he sees as a worrying lack of intensity in the youngster’s approach, both in matches and on the training ground.

“He has to give us way more in his day-to-day commitment,” Beye said bluntly. “Other players gave way more.” The comment appeared to reference not just Sunday’s match but a pattern of inconsistency that has left Nwaneri on the fringes since arriving at the Stade Vélodrome.

Beye elaborated that adapting to Ligue 1’s high-physical demands is non‑negotiable. He pointed specifically to Nwaneri’s defensive work rate and his consistency in training as areas that must improve significantly.

“There are still aspects of his game that need to be much stronger,” the manager added. “He is a big talent, yes, but talent alone isn’t enough at this level. He must prove himself every day.”

The message is clear: Nwaneri’s future minutes will depend not on his reputation or highlights reel, but on showing the same hunger and defensive responsibility as his teammates. For now, the bench remains his place—until his commitment matches his gifts.
