The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has welcomed what it described as the restoration of lawful leadership within its ranks, following the formal recognition of Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam as National Chairman by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Monday, the National Chairman of the SDP, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, said the development marked a critical test of democratic institutions and the supremacy of the rule of law.

According to the statement, it is “a defining moment when institutions are tested and the rule of law must prevail over uncertainty.

“That moment has arrived, and it has spoken clearly with the restoration and formal recognition of Shehu Musa Gabam as the legitimate National Chairman of our great party, as duly reflected on the official portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“This decisive development is not merely administrative; it is a reaffirmation of constitutional order, institutional integrity, and democratic maturity.”

The party stressed the significance of the judiciary in safeguarding democratic values, describing it as pivotal to the country’s democratic survival.

“It is often said that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man. Within the Social Democratic Party, we boldly affirm that the judiciary stands as the last hope of our nascent democracy,” the statement read in part.

The SDP commended the judiciary for upholding the rule of law and also praised INEC for complying with the court’s decision.

“We commend the judiciary for its courage, independence, and fidelity to the rule of law. Equally, we extend our appreciation to INEC for its prompt compliance with the subsisting court judgment—an act that reinforces public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions and regulatory processes,” it noted.

The party leadership also expressed appreciation to its members across the country for their loyalty during the leadership dispute.

“The leadership of the party expresses deep gratitude to our resilient members nationwide for their patience, discipline, and unwavering commitment throughout this period. Your steadfastness has preserved the soul of the party.”

Calling for unity, the party urged its members to rally behind the recognised leadership and focus on strengthening the organisation.

“All party faithful are enjoined to align with the legally recognized leadership and recommit to the collective mission of building a stronger, united, and forward-looking party. The time for consolidation is now,” the statement added.
