Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election and a prominent figure in the coalition movement within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, has said the opposition’s ongoing engagements are driven by national interest rather than mere political calculations.

Obi reiterated his vision of a more united, secure, and productive Nigeria while speaking to journalists on Tuesday after a closed-door meeting with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, in Ibadan.

The former Anambra State governor spent nearly two hours in a private meeting with Makinde at the Oyo State Secretariat, describing the engagement as part of ongoing consultations focused on Nigeria’s future amid intensifying opposition realignments.

Addressing reporters, Obi said the visit was one of several discussions with key stakeholders across the country aimed at fostering collaboration and addressing critical national issues.

“We have come to consult and to continue discussions with His Excellency the Governor on issues that concern the future of our country.

“My dear brother, the governor, and I share a common belief that Nigeria must work for everyone, and that is the focus of our engagement,” he said.

Obi stressed that the talks go beyond routine political strategy, noting that the broader objective is to build a stronger and more inclusive nation while advancing meaningful coalition efforts ahead of future elections.

He added that such engagements are necessary to promote unity and develop solutions capable of addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic and governance challenges.
