Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has laid the foundation for a N1.3 billion modern secondary school in Kaura Goge, Nasarawa Local Government Area, as part of efforts to improve access to quality education.

The project, when completed, will replace the defunct Maikwatashi Secondary School, which had fallen into disrepair and suffered land encroachment, with portions allegedly sold off illegally.

Governor Yusuf said the decision to construct a new school followed complaints by residents over the absence of a functional secondary school in the area, forcing students to travel long distances, particularly to Sabon Gari, to access education.

“There are a large number of students in this community who have to commute to Sabon Gari for schooling. This project is aimed at addressing that challenge and bringing education closer to the people,” he said.

The governor also disclosed that the former Maikwatashi school had been handed over to the Kano State College of Arts and Islamic Studies for continued educational use.

He urged residents to cooperate with the contractor to ensure timely completion of the project, while cautioning the contractor to adhere strictly to quality standards.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Goni Ali Haruna Makoda, said the school would cost N1.3 billion and include 32 classrooms, 36 toilets, four libraries, and other supporting facilities.

Makoda described the project as a fulfilment of the governor’s campaign promise to revitalise the education sector and expand infrastructure across the state.
