The National Association of Colleges of Education Students (NANCES) has commended former lawmaker, Effiong Dickson Bob, for what it described as his “visionary leadership” in advancing digital education in Nigeria through the Electronic Education Initiative (EDON).

In a statement issued on Thursday by NANCES national president, Comrade Kur Isaac Ushahemba, the association praised the former chairman of the Governing Council and Pro-Chancellor of the University of Benin for laying the groundwork for what it called a transformative shift in the country’s education sector.

The association said Senator Bob’s foresight during his tenure led to the integration of EDON at the university, a move it noted has since evolved into a nationwide platform reshaping teaching and learning across Colleges of Education.

“History will remember Senator Effiong Bob as one of the foremost leaders who looked beyond the conventional classroom system and took bold steps to integrate technology into education,” the statement read.

NANCES added that the initiative had grown into a major digital education platform, enhancing access to academic resources, boosting digital literacy among students and lecturers, and equipping learners to compete globally.

“Today, EDON has become a household name within Nigeria’s educational sector, particularly in Colleges of Education, where it continues to simplify teaching and learning while improving accessibility,” the association said.

The student body further noted that the current progress in digital learning would not have been possible without Bob’s “long-term vision, courage, and strategic leadership.”

It also applauded the management of EDON for sustaining innovation and consistency in driving digital transformation across tertiary institutions.

“The impact already being felt across Colleges of Education is a clear indication that the future of digital education in Nigeria is bright,” NANCES stated.

Looking ahead, the association expressed optimism that continued collaboration would accelerate full digital transformation across Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

NANCES president, Comrade Kur Isaac Ushahemba, said the government should recognise and support leaders with forward-thinking ideas.

“We salute Senator Effiong Bob for this noble legacy and his immeasurable contribution to the future of education in Nigeria. At a time when many embraced the status quo, he envisioned a future capable of transforming the nation’s students and workforce,” he said.
