Ugo Udezue, the Chairman of the Marketing and Sponsorship Committee of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, has provided insights into the D’Tigress WNBA Tour, describing it as a strategic long-term investment in the team’s future.
The Nigerian women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, is concluding their tour of the USA with a match against the WNBA team, Portland Fire, on 3 May in Portland.
This follows two earlier encounters against the LA Sparks on 25 April, which ended in a disappointing 89-63 defeat for the D’Tigress, and a close match against the Minnesota Lynx on 27 April, where they lost 88-79.
The Nigeria Basketball Federation assembled a squad of 21 players, with only about seven coming from the teams that secured victories in last year’s Afrobasket and the World Cup qualifiers held in France in February. Udezue explained that this composition was intentional.
He remarked, “My assessment of D’Tigress’ WNBA Tour is that it embodies confidence, hope, and a long-term vision for our team. What we are witnessing goes beyond mere competition; it is a deliberate effort to build a sustainable future.”
He continued, “Integrating youth into this squad is precisely the kind of infusion needed to maintain excellence and elevate our programme for years to come. Great teams evolve by harmonising experience with emerging talent in competitive environments.”
Udezue emphasised that the Federation’s focus is aimed squarely at the future when arranging the tour. “While some might fixate on immediate outcomes, our perspective extends beyond the scoreboard. This tour is fundamentally about growth, exposure, and identifying the next generation of leaders for Nigerian basketball.”
He concluded, “From what I’ve seen, the future is not just promising; it is genuinely exciting.” The D’Tigress have remained unbeaten against any African team since the summer of 2015 and are gearing up for the 2026 FIBA World Cup scheduled to take place in Germany in September.
