Suspected hoodlums have attacked and set ablaze two vehicles, including one belonging to the Musa Adamu Network (MAN), a political association, in Yankara town, Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State, leaving several people injured and some shops damaged.
The incident reportedly occurred during preparations to host Governor Dikko Umaru Radda at a political rally, as supporters and local officials awaited his arrival at the traditional ruler’s palace.
The Chairman of the MAN Network Caucus, Alhaji Nura Sule Yandaki, who led the delegation, said the group was travelling to Faskari to participate in the governor’s political rally when the attack occurred.
According to him, tension erupted in Yankara following a reported Maulud procession by an Islamic sect, during which suspected hoodlums allegedly took advantage of the situation to attack passing vehicles.
Yandaki disclosed that he was accompanied by 11 members of the association who had been selected to attend the rally, adding that they all escaped unharmed despite the destruction of their vehicle.
Confirming the incident, a local government official in the area disclosed that several persons sustained injuries, while two vehicles were damaged and set ablaze during the violence.
The official further revealed that some shops were also damaged in the ensuing disturbance, although the extent of the destruction and the number of casualties could not be immediately established.
He explained that the violence erupted while residents, political supporters and local officials were awaiting the governor’s arrival at the traditional ruler’s palace.
The official, however, assured that security had been restored and normal activities had resumed in the town.
“Everything is now under control. The incident happened while we were waiting to receive the governor at the palace of the traditional ruler, but the situation has since normalised,” the official said.
Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media and observed by our correspondent showed a group of youths attacking a vehicle before setting it ablaze.
Another video showed an apparently seriously injured security operative receiving medical attention on a hospital bed, with visible bloodstains.
However, the identity of the injured operative, the extent of his injuries, and the circumstances surrounding the footage could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report.
Reacting to the incident, the Secretary of MAN Network, Alhaji Shamsuddeen Sani Lema, condemned the attack, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable in a democratic society.
Lema called on security agencies to investigate the violence, identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
He maintained that political activities should not be accompanied by violence, intimidation or destruction of property, stressing that every Nigerian had the constitutional right to participate in peaceful political gatherings.
The secretary also urged the country’s justice system and relevant authorities to develop stronger measures to address recurring acts of political violence and lawlessness.
