President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has congratulated Nigerian workers on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, commending their resilience, hard work, and patriotism despite prevailing economic and workplace challenges.

Akpabio in a statement by his special adviser on media and publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh,  praised the contributions of workers across all sectors of the economy.

“On this auspicious occasion of Workers’ Day 2026, I join millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to commend and congratulate the resilient, industrious, and patriotic Nigerian workers whose sweat and sacrifice continue to sustain the heartbeat of our nation,” he said.

The senate president described workers as the backbone of the country’s development, acknowledging the roles of teachers, farmers, healthcare professionals, artisans, traders, civil servants, security personnel, and private sector employees.

“You are the true heroes of our democracy and the engine of our economy,” he added.

Akpabio noted that the 10th National Assembly is aware of the challenges confronting workers, including the rising cost of living and increasing workplace demands.

He assured that the senate remains committed to enacting laws that promote workers’ welfare.

According to him, ongoing legislative efforts are focused on ensuring a living wage, safer workplaces, pension reforms, job creation, and policies that uphold the dignity of labour.

He highlighted the passage of the National Minimum Wage Act and the implementation of workers’ welfare packages as key steps taken to improve the conditions of Nigerian workers.

The senate president also called on employers in both public and private sectors to prioritise employee welfare, stressing that a motivated workforce is essential for national productivity and economic growth.

He commended organised labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, for their constructive engagement and patriotism.

Akpabio pledged continued collaboration with labour groups to ensure that the interests of workers are adequately represented in policymaking.

“On behalf of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I salute your courage, celebrate your contributions, and pledge that we will not relent until every Nigerian worker can look to the future with hope, dignity, and confidence,” he said.
