CISLAC Raises Concern Over Obi, Kwankwaso’s Defection

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has expressed concern over the defection of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the National Democratic Coalition (NDC).

In a statement, the Executive Director of CISLAC/TI-Nigeria, Auwal Ibrahim Musa-Rafsanjani, said while political realignments are a legitimate feature of democratic practice, they must be guided by clear ideological principles and the broader public interest rather than narrow political expediency.

The organisation noted that frequent defections among political actors in Nigeria often lack substantive policy direction, thereby weakening party systems and undermining citizens’ trust in democratic institutions.

“Political parties should represent coherent visions for national development, and any movement across party lines should be anchored on well-articulated programmes that address Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including economic hardship, insecurity, corruption, and social inequality,” the statement read.

CISLAC acknowledged that individuals have the constitutional right to freedom of association but urged Obi and Kwankwaso to clearly communicate the rationale behind their decision to Nigerians.

According to the group, such explanations should include how their new political alignment would better serve the aspirations of the Nigerian people.

“Nigerians deserve clarity, consistency, and accountability from those seeking to lead,” CISLAC stated.

The organisation also called on the leadership of political parties to strengthen internal democracy, uphold transparency in candidate selection processes, and avoid actions that could deepen political fragmentation or voter apathy ahead of future elections.

It warned that the recurring trend of elite-driven political migration without adequate citizen consultation risks further alienating the electorate.

CISLAC further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain vigilant in ensuring that all processes associated with such defections comply with constitutional provisions and electoral guidelines.

It stressed that adherence to these regulations is essential to preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic framework.

The group reiterated that Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive when political actors prioritise national interest above personal ambition, uphold democratic values, and remain accountable to the citizens they seek to represent.
