Team Nigeria reinforced its dominance on the continental stage after securing a record-extending 15th title in the women’s category at the African Wrestling Championships held in Alexandria, Egypt, over the weekend.
The Nigerian women delivered a near-flawless performance, winning eight gold and two silver medals across 10 events to once again underline the country’s supremacy in African wrestling. The achievement further cements Nigeria’s long-standing reputation as the powerhouse of women’s wrestling on the continent.
Among the standout performers were Mercy Genesis, Adijat Idris, Esther Asaolu and Mercy Adekuoroye, all of whom produced commanding displays in their respective weight categories to secure gold medals. Their performances were marked by technical superiority, tactical discipline and resilience, qualities that have become synonymous with Nigeria’s wrestling tradition.
In the men’s freestyle category, Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo provided a major highlight by defeating Egypt’s home favourite, Mohamed Mostafa, with an impressive 10–4 victory to claim Nigeria’s only gold medal in the division. His triumph stood out as one of the most memorable bouts of the championship.
Nigeria also secured silver medals through Ebierelayefa Andrew and Stephen Akintewe, while Dideikemei Erefagha, Solomon Ulabo and Saviour Egoli added bronze medals to ensure a strong overall finish. The men’s team ultimately placed third in the standings.
President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, praised the athletes for their determination and commitment throughout the competition, describing their performance as a reflection of hard work and national pride.
The National Sports Commission also commended the wrestlers, coaches and officials for what it described as an outstanding outing, noting that the results continue to strengthen Nigeria’s position as a leading force in African wrestling.
With another dominant showing, Team Nigeria has once again set the benchmark for excellence on the continent, raising expectations ahead of future international competitions.
