PDP: Be Ready to Make Sacrifices, Wabara-led BoT Tells Turaki-led Interim Working Committee

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Adolphus Wabara, has charged members of the newly proposed Interim National Working Committee (INWC) to be prepared to make sacrifices in rebuilding the party amid its ongoing leadership crisis.

Wabara gave the charge on Monday while addressing the 103rd meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC), convened by two-thirds of its members in line with the party’s constitution.

He described the meeting as a defining moment for the PDP, noting that it demonstrated the party’s resilience and capacity to overcome internal challenges.

“The 103rd NEC meeting… underscores the resilience and capacity of the PDP to triumph over seeming impossible situations,” he said.

The BoT chairman explained that the board assumed administrative leadership of the party following a Supreme Court judgment that nullified the previous National Working Committee and invalidated the 2025 National Convention that produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led leadership.

According to him, the intervention was necessary to prevent a leadership vacuum and stabilise the party.

“As you are already aware, the Board of Trustees… assumed administrative leadership of our party… following the judgment of the Supreme Court… which stripped the PDP of a National Working Committee,” he said.

Wabara disclosed that the NEC meeting was convened to chart a new course for the party, including the emergence of an interim leadership to steer its affairs.

“This meeting is… principally convened to fashion out ways to chart a new course for our party. Central to this is the appointment of an Interim National Working Committee,” he stated.

He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to respect the Supreme Court judgment and recognise the new leadership once approved.

Addressing members of the proposed interim committee, Wabara emphasised the enormity of the task ahead, calling for unity, discipline, and commitment to democratic principles.

“You must be ready to make sacrifices, foster genuine reconciliation and unity to rebuild our party and set it back to its winning ways,” he said.

“Your decisions and activities must be firm, guided by the principles of internal democracy, justice, fairness, and transparency.”

He stressed that the PDP must rise above personal and group interests, noting that the party remains bigger than any individual or faction.

“We must bear in mind that the PDP is bigger than any individual or group and ensure the supremacy of the party on all issues,” Wabara added.

The BoT chairman also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of contributing to the PDP’s crisis, alleging attempts to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Despite the challenges, he expressed optimism that the PDP would recover and reclaim power, stating that Nigerians were looking to the party for leadership.

“Nigerians are earnestly praying for the PDP to rise again… the hope of millions of Nigerians lies in the return of the PDP to power in 2027,” he said.

Wabara assured party members that the BoT, in collaboration with other organs, had taken steps to stabilise the party, including consultations with stakeholders and convening the NEC meeting in line with constitutional provisions.

He concluded by expressing confidence in the party’s future, urging members to remain steadfast.
