Former Kogi State governorship candidate, Yakubu Murtala Ajaka, has extended an apology to former Governor Yahaya Bello, calling for peace, unity, and collective progress across the state.

Ajaka, who contested the November 2023 gubernatorial election under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), made this known in a public statement issued on Monday. He reflected on the aftermath of the election and its impact on political relationships in Kogi State.

In the statement, he acknowledged that the intensity of the 2023 electoral contest strained relationships and deepened divisions, particularly between himself and the immediate past governor.

“The political disagreement between me and the then Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Yahaya Bello, was marked by strong differences,” Ajaka stated, noting that the circumstances were driven more by passion and commitment to their respective causes than by personal animosity.

Adopting a conciliatory tone, Ajaka described his message as a deliberate step toward reconciliation.

“Today, in the overriding interest of peace, unity, and the progress of our dear state, I believe it is both necessary and honourable to rise above the past. I extend a hand of understanding and goodwill, and where my actions or words may have caused offence, I profoundly apologize in the spirit of reconciliation,” he said.

He added that he has chosen to let go of all grievances, emphasizing the need for healing and collective advancement in the state.

Ajaka also expressed appreciation to his supporters across Kogi, including elders, youths, women, and political associates who stood by him during the electioneering period.

He paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the course of the political process, praying for the repose of their souls and comfort for their families.

The former SDP candidate noted that his decision to speak at this time aligns with ongoing consultations and his commitment to ensuring that his actions reflect the collective interest of the people of Kogi East.

He urged political actors and citizens to prioritize unity over division, stressing that no ambition or contest should outweigh the peace and stability of the state.

“At this critical point in our state’s journey, we must remind ourselves that no ambition, no contest, and no individual interest is greater than the peace, stability, and collective advancement of Kogi State,” he said.

Calling for a shift in focus, Ajaka emphasized the need to move beyond past disagreements and work together toward a more inclusive and prosperous future.

“Our focus must now shift from division to unity and collaboration, and from the past to the future we must build together,” he added.

Political observers say the development could signal a new phase of reconciliation and possible realignment within Kogi State’s political landscape ahead of future electoral contests.
