The inspector-general of police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has announced the creation of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), a restructured and upgraded version of the former Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) units.

Speaking at a conference with commissioners of police and above at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, the IGP said the VCRU would operate under strict intelligence-based deployment, with officers undergoing specialised training in tactical operations, human rights compliance, and rules of engagement. The unit will also be subject to civilian oversight and structured reviews to ensure accountability.

According to him, “This is not a rebranding exercise. It is a fundamental shift in how we tackle serious crime.”

The IGP also directed commissioners of police to publicly launch the VCRU in their respective states with the involvement of community leaders, religious figures, and the media to promote transparency and public trust.

IGP Disu also highlighted significant operational successes recorded by the Police Force in April 2026.

According to him, police operatives arrested 28 suspected terrorists, 51 murder suspects, 62 armed robbery suspects, 85 kidnapping suspects, and 54 suspected cultists.

Also, 189 kidnap victims were rescued, while 140 firearms, 1,074 rounds of ammunition, and 37 stolen vehicles were recovered in various intelligence-led operations nationwide.

While speaking on the importance of collaboration, IGP Disu ordered commissioners of police to hold regular town hall meetings with stakeholders, including traditional rulers, youth groups, market associations, and transport unions.

He further directed the commissioners to make their contact details accessible to community leaders, describing it as a practical step toward inclusive and responsive policing.

“Security is a collective responsibility. When citizens trust the police, they share vital information that saves lives,” he said.

The IGP reiterated ongoing efforts to retrain police personnel on human rights standards and professional conduct. He also encouraged Nigerians to utilise the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU), which remained operational for reporting misconduct.
