The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has uncovered and dismantled a network of caves and underground tunnels used for illicit drug consumption and trafficking in the Rimin Kebe area of the State.

The operation, conducted under the code name Operation Sharar Mafaka, followed credible intelligence and sustained surveillance by the cocommand’s peratives.

Spokesperson for the agency in Kano, Sadiq Maigatari, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, noting that the operation was carried out under the leadership of the Commander, CN Dahiru Yahaya Lawal.

He said operatives stormed the area on Monday evening, where they discovered multiple caves deliberately constructed and modified by suspected drug dealers as living quarters and trading points.

According to him, some of the caves were furnished with household items such as mats, pillows, food flasks, plates, and cutlery, indicating that they were used for prolonged habitation and for regular illicit activities.

Maigatari further revealed that some of the structures were interconnected through tunnels, while others were still under construction, suggesting an organised and expanding network of drug-related operations in the area.

He added that several caves and tunnels had been dislodged, while efforts were underway to demolish the remaining structures and secure the area against further criminal use.

Commander Lawal, quoted in the statement, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to eradicating drug trafficking and abuse in the State.

“W” will continue to pursue these elements wherever they hide. Our commitment is unwavering. Those still involved in the illicit drug trade should desist, as the agency remains resolute in sanitising Kano of drug-related crimes,” he said.

The commander noted that the operation aligns with the directive of the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd), to intensify the crackdown on drug networks across the country.
