Miami Police Sue Ben Affleck, Matt Damon Over The Rip Movie

Two Miami-Dade police officers have filed a defamation lawsuit against Hollywood stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon over their portrayal in the Netflix crime drama, The Rip.

The officers, Jason Smith and Jonathan Santana, claim the film has caused serious damage to their personal and professional reputations. According to the lawsuit, the movie implies that they engaged in unethical behaviour and misconduct during a real-life police operation in June 2016.

Although the officers are not named, the legal complaint argues that the film’s characters are clearly based on them. The movie tells the story of two officers who discover $20 million in cartel cash, which leads to corruption within the department. In reality, Smith and Santana were the officers who seized over $21 million during a high-profile investigation in 2016.

The officers allege that since the movie’s release in January 2026, colleagues and family members have questioned their integrity. They claim the film incorrectly suggests they used seized funds for personal gain, such as buying luxury items and paying for private schools.

Attorneys for the officers reportedly asked the production companies to halt the film’s release in late 2025, but the request was ignored. The officers are now seeking a public apology, a correction to the film, and financial damages.
