A group under the auspices of the Arewa Cohesion for Peace, Unity and Development Initiative (ACI) has expressed deep concern over the ongoing leadership crisis rocking the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), describing it as embarrassing and a “show of shame” for Northern Nigeria.
The group said the unfolding situation is a mockery of the unity, dignity, and collective values of the North.
In a statement issued by its director general, Dr. Abdullahi Idris, the organisation said recent communiqués, counter-statements, public accusations, allegations of constitutional violations, financial misconduct, abuse of office, police involvement, and factional battles within the ACF have reduced what was once a respected northern platform into a public spectacle and a source of ridicule before other regions.
Idris noted that the North is currently facing enormous challenges, including insecurity, poverty, unemployment, poor education, economic hardship, and weakening social cohesion, making it unacceptable for leaders to engage in open conflicts that further damage the region’s image.
“The disturbing events surrounding the leadership crisis in the ACF, including the exchange of damaging allegations, public confrontations, contradictory claims, institutional confusion, and media battles, have become a major source of embarrassment to Northern Nigeria and its people.
“Rather than projecting unity, wisdom, and direction, the North is unfortunately being exposed to unnecessary ridicule and political mockery before other regions due to the ongoing show of shame within an organisation expected to provide moral and strategic leadership,” the statement said.
ACI said recent developments within the forum reflect deep division, leadership failure, and institutional breakdown at a time when northerners expect maturity and responsible leadership from their elders and stakeholders.
The organisation stressed that no region can progress where personal interests, ego battles, and power struggles override collective responsibility and the common good.
It called on all parties involved to place the interest of the North above personal ambitions and to embrace dialogue, restraint, and constitutional order to prevent further damage to the region’s image.
ACI reaffirmed that it remains a credible platform committed to promoting and protecting the interests of Northern Nigeria.
According to Dr. Idris, the group is made up of visionary and disciplined stakeholders driven by integrity, patriotism, and commitment to service.
“Our organisation is founded on the principles of accountability, unity, development, peace, security, and inclusive leadership. We believe the North deserves a platform that truly reflects the aspirations of its people rather than one constantly consumed by internal conflicts and leadership controversies,” he said.
He added that ACI remains committed to constructive engagement on issues affecting Northern Nigeria, particularly in the areas of security, youth empowerment, education, economic development, peaceful coexistence, and regional unity.
“The North needs forward-looking leadership with integrity, credibility, and the capacity to confront its challenges. This is not the time for endless internal battles and public disgrace. Our people deserve purposeful leadership capable of restoring confidence, protecting northern interests, and promoting national unity,” he added.
ACI called on northern elders, political leaders, professionals, traditional institutions, and civil society groups to support efforts aimed at rebuilding the region’s image and restoring credible leadership capable of earning respect across Nigeria.
