FHA Begins Construction Of 195-Unit Housing Estate In Ogun

The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has commenced construction of a 195-unit housing estate in Ogun State, deepening the federal government’s drive to expand affordable housing delivery and revive large-scale public housing projects across the country.

The project, christened FHA Gateway Estate, is located in Ofada, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, and was officially flagged off on Wednesday by the Managing Director and Chief Executive of the FHA, Oyetunde Ojo.

The development comes amid growing pressure on the Federal Government to tackle Nigeria’s widening housing deficit, estimated at over 20 million units, with the FHA saying the Ogun project forms part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to accelerate housing delivery nationwide.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Ojo said the estate would deliver 95 two-bedroom apartments and 100 three-bedroom terrace duplexes through a Public-Private Partnership arrangement involving Greenpasture Homes and Akkenog International Company Limited.

According to him, the project reflects a deliberate shift toward private-sector collaboration as a strategy for mass housing delivery, stressing that government alone cannot bridge the country’s housing gap.

“Today’s groundbreaking marks another critical step in expanding Nigeria’s housing stock and fulfilling the mandate handed to us by President Tinubu to make housing more accessible to Nigerians,” he said.

The FHA boss noted that the Authority intends to replicate similar partnership-driven projects across different parts of the country, describing the PPP model as a sustainable pathway for unlocking housing investments and accelerating urban development.

He also linked the viability of the Ogun estate to ongoing infrastructure upgrades by the federal government, particularly the reconstruction of the Sagamu-Owode road corridor, which he said has significantly increased the strategic value of the estate and surrounding communities.

In a strong show of confidence in the Tinubu administration’s housing agenda, FHA’s executive director of Estate Services, Ezekiel Nya Etok, said the current administration’s intervention in the sector could redefine public housing delivery in Nigeria.

Etok argued that the scale of ongoing housing initiatives under the present government could eventually earn national recognition comparable to the famed low-cost housing schemes introduced during the era of former Lagos governor, Lateef Jakande.

Providing details of the development, FHA General Manager for Partnerships, Peter Okpanachi, said the estate was designed to combine modern infrastructure, security and environmental serenity to attract homeowners and investors alike.

Officials of the private sector partners also pledged strict compliance with approved standards and timelines. Managing Director of Greenpasture Homes Ltd, Oloyede Oluwale, assured prospective subscribers that the project would not suffer abandonment, citing the FHA’s technical oversight and institutional backing as safeguards for delivery.

Similarly, managing director of Akkenog International Company Ltd, Kehinde Akinwunmi Ogunusi, described the partnership framework as rigorous and transparent, expressing confidence that the estate would emerge as one of Ogun State’s flagship residential developments.

The latest FHA intervention underscores the federal government’s renewed reliance on infrastructure-backed housing schemes and PPP arrangements as it seeks to stimulate construction activity, attract investment and ease pressure in Nigeria’s overstretched housing market.
