Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has thrown his support behind a possible return of Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid, insisting the Portuguese tactician remains the ideal figure to restore discipline and competitiveness at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Speculation surrounding Mourinho’s future has intensified in recent weeks, with reports suggesting the veteran coach could leave Benfica at the end of the season to begin a second spell with the Spanish giants.
Ancelotti, who famously guided Real Madrid to their historic “La Décima” UEFA Champions League triumph after succeeding Mourinho in 2013, believes the former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss still possesses the pedigree and mentality needed to succeed at the highest level.
Speaking in an interview with The Athletic, the Italian manager praised Mourinho’s impact across Europe and expressed delight at the prospect of his return to Madrid.
“To be back at Real Madrid, I will be really happy for him,” Ancelotti said.
“He can do a fantastic job, as he always did in all the clubs that he was at.”
Mourinho’s first spell at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013 remains one of the most intense eras in the club’s modern history. Although he won only one La Liga title during that period, he is widely credited with rebuilding a fiercely competitive side capable of challenging FC Barcelona during the peak of Pep Guardiola’s dominance.
The Portuguese manager also delivered a Copa del Rey title and guided Real Madrid to three consecutive Champions League semi-finals, laying the foundation for the club’s subsequent European dominance.
Ancelotti’s endorsement is likely to strengthen calls among sections of the Madrid fanbase for Mourinho’s return, particularly amid growing pressure for renewed leadership and tactical direction at the club.
Despite his fiery reputation, Mourinho remains one of football’s most decorated managers, having won league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain, alongside multiple European trophies.
Should the move materialise, it would mark one of the most talked-about managerial comebacks in European football, with Mourinho tasked once again with restoring Real Madrid’s authority both domestically and on the continental stage.
