Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker Genevieve Nnaji is said to return to the global screen in a new BBC Studios drama series titled Wahala.
The six-part thriller is an adaptation of Nikki May’s debut novel of the same name and was developed for television by BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Theresa Ikoko. The series will be broadcast on BBC One and available for streaming on BBC iPlayer.
The production features a high-profile female-led cast, including Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, and Susan Wokoma, alongside Nnaji. The plot follows the lives of four Nigerian-British women in modern-day London as they balance their careers and families while dealing with long-buried secrets.
The story focuses on three inseparable friends, Simi, Boo, and Ronke, whose lives are disrupted by the arrival of a fourth woman, Isobel, portrayed by Deborah Ayorinde.
This project marks Nnaji’s first major acting role in several years. The actress, who made history with her 2018 directorial debut, Lionheart, the first Nigerian film acquired by Netflix, has maintained a low profile recently, making this comeback a highly anticipated event in the Nigerian and international film industry.
