The Danish Royal Household has officially confirmed that the former monarch, Queen Margrethe II, was rushed to the hospital on Thursday, May 14, 2026, after suffering a heart attack.

The 86-year-old former Queen was admitted to Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen’s premier medical and teaching facility, where she is expected to remain under clinical observation and undergo further examinations throughout the weekend.

In an official statement released by the Palace, officials noted that while the former monarch is experiencing fatigue following the medical emergency, she remains in good spirits. The Royal House assured the public that further updates regarding her recovery would be provided as information becomes available.

“Her Majesty Queen Margrethe has been admitted to Rigshospitalet this afternoon due to a heart attack. Queen Margrethe will be admitted over the weekend for observation and further examinations,” the statement read.

Queen Margrethe II made history in January 2024 when she became the first Danish monarch in nearly 900 years to abdicate the throne, citing health challenges as a primary factor in her decision. She handed over the reins to her eldest son, King Frederik X, after 52 years of service. At the time, she noted that significant back surgery in 2023 had affected her future and the necessity of passing on responsibilities to the next generation.
