The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has finally spoken out about why the planned friendly between the Reggae Girlz and Nigeria’s Super Falcons was called off, pointing to administrative hurdles and FIFA rulebook requirements.
In a formal release, the JFF confirmed that the match – originally set to be played in England – had to be scrapped because key logistical and procedural details did not align with international standards.
“The Jamaica Football Federation reiterates its dedication to FIFA compliance and openness amid recent speculation around the proposed Reggae Girlz fixture,” the statement said.
“Contrary to claims that the cancellation stemmed from ‘administrative issues’ on Jamaica’s side, here are the actual facts.”
The JFF explained that the proposed dates for the encounter were May 27, 28, or 30, 2026. However, those dates fall outside the official FIFA Women’s International Window, which runs from June 1 to June 9, 2026.
“Consequently, clubs would not have been required by FIFA regulations to release their players for international duty during that period,” the federation added.
The JFF noted that organisers were made aware of this issue from the very start, but talks continued in hopes of finding a workable solution.
The potential matchup had sparked significant buzz as a quality test between two of the most respected women’s national teams from Africa and the Caribbean.
With the friendly now off, the Super Falcons are expected to look for other warm-up games as they gear up for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
