The opening day of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation National Open Trials in Abeokuta, Ogun State, delivered on its promise of showcasing technique, resilience, and determination.
The event, featuring three categories—Men’s Under-40 and both Men’s and Women’s Under-30 divisions—saw athletes demonstrate precision and skill as they vied for podium finishes.
In the Women’s Under-30 category, with 11 entrants, Aderibigbe Faridah progressed directly to the quarter-finals where she defeated Omirinde Maridiyat. She then displayed remarkable tenacity in the semi-finals to overcome Abu Ayotunde and reach the final. The Osun-born taekwondo athlete captivated the judges with an impressive performance, bringing her A-game to the mat to clinch the gold medal, while Jegede Faith secured the silver.
In the Men’s Under-30 category, Salawudeen Abdulafeez proved to be the standout competitor, entertaining hundreds of spectators. He defeated Solomon Agada in the quarter-finals and Agada Elijah in the semi-finals before going on to secure the gold medal for Kennis Taekwondo Club.
With considerable experience, Harun Usman, representing Enugu State in the Men’s Under-40 Poomsae category, demonstrated accuracy, rhythm, and composure throughout his performance. His display clearly reflected the extensive experience gained from numerous championships over the years. Harun impressed the judges to claim the gold medal, with Abodunrin Oluwaseun taking the silver and Femi Kolawole earning the bronze.
