The President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo, has called on the Federal Government to address insecurity, ensure fair wages and improve working conditions for Nigerian workers.
Speaking during an interview with Leadership Newspaper in Abuja, Osifo said insecurity remained both an economic and labour crisis that required urgent government attention.
Osifo, who also serves as President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, stated that farmers were increasingly unable to access their farmlands due to persistent attacks. At the same time, workers and traders continued to operate in fear.
“Insecurity is not only a direct existential threat, but also an economic and labour crisis,” he said. “Farmers can no longer access their land, workers move around in fear, and traders face severe supply chain disruptions caused by armed banditry.”
He added that the unsafe movement of goods across the Country had significantly contributed to rising inflation and soaring market prices.
The TUC president also expressed concern over the growing rate of casualisation in the labour market, describing the trend as deeply troubling.
“Many workers are employed without job security, fair wages or basic protection,” he said. “Nigerian workers deserve commendation for their resilience, creativity and determination in keeping the economy running despite the country’s challenges.”
Osifo described workers as the backbone of the nation’s economy, noting that sectors such as construction, mining, steel, hospitality, and oil and gas had continued to function largely because of their dedication.
He further revealed that many employees endure difficult commuting conditions, often leaving home very early and trekking long distances due to inadequate transportation.
The labour leader called on the Minister of Labour and other relevant institutions to enforce labour laws and safeguard the dignity and welfare of workers across the Country.
