Fresh controversy has erupted within the Peoples Democratic Party over the purported waiver granted to former President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the party’s presidential primary, as Senator Samuel Anyanwu has dismissed the move as illegal and deceptive.
Anyanwu, who is the National Secretary of the Nyesom Wike-backed faction of the PDP, accused Tanimu Turaki and his group of orchestrating what he described as “a deceit and drama taken too far.”
Speaking to LEADERSHIP on Tuesday in Abuja on the controversy surrounding Jonathan’s alleged waiver, Anyanwu questioned the legitimacy of the process, insisting that the proceedings were not monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“The purported waiver granted to former President Goodluck Jonathan is nothing but a deceit and a drama taken too far by Tanimu Turaki and his group,” Anyanwu said.
“INEC did not supervise their proceedings, so where exactly are they going to submit the name? You cannot conduct such a process outside the law and expect it to stand.”
He described the move as a political charade designed to mislead party members and Nigerians, maintaining that only processes conducted in line with the law and recognised by INEC would be valid.
The PDP chieftain further argued that no individual or group could unilaterally confer legitimacy on any aspirant outside the framework recognised by the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.
The controversy comes amid growing uncertainty within the PDP over its leadership structure and preparations for the next presidential election, with different factions laying claim to the party’s authentic leadership.
