Mixed reactions on social media have trailed an outreach programme by Andray Finance Limited that provided support to 1,000 widows during the birthday of its chairman and founder, Bayowa Borokini.

The initiative, carried out in partnership with Kokun Foundation, brought together a large number of widows, who received cash support, food items, and other relief materials, according to organisers.

The event also included entertainment and interactive activities.

In a statement posted online, Kokun Foundation said the outreach was designed to support vulnerable groups while marking the founder’s birthday.

The programme generated a range of responses online. While many users welcomed the intervention and acknowledged its potential benefit to beneficiaries, others raised concerns about the visibility given to the exercise.

Some commenters described the initiative as impactful and encouraged similar efforts, pointing to the need for private sector involvement in addressing social welfare gaps.

However, others questioned the decision to publicise the outreach, arguing that charitable acts should not necessarily be shared on social media.

Despite differing views, the initiative drew attention to the growing role of corporate-backed interventions in Nigeria’s social support space, as well as ongoing debates around the relationship between philanthropy and public visibility.
