Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has met with South African ministers and political party leaders over concerns affecting Nigerians residing in the country, particularly issues relating to immigration, security, and rising tensions involving foreign nationals.

Obi, who arrived in South Africa on Friday to participate in an international conference, also held engagements with members of the Nigerian community in Cape Town to gain firsthand insight into the challenges they face.

In a statement shared on his X account on Saturday, Obi disclosed that he held discussions with three South African ministers and political leaders on ways to strengthen regional cooperation and promote peaceful coexistence between both countries.

According to him, the meetings involved Mr. Leon Schreiber, South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs and a senior member of the Democratic Alliance; Mr. Velenkosini Hlabisa, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP); and Mr. Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture and leader of the Patriotic Alliance (PA).

Obi described the discussions as constructive and frank, noting that they focused on migration issues, economic hardship, youth unemployment, security concerns, and tensions affecting African migrants in South Africa.

He stressed the need for Nigeria and South Africa to deepen dialogue and cooperation in addressing shared continental challenges.

“I strongly believe that Nigeria and South Africa, both major nations on the continent, must continue to build stronger dialogue, deepen cooperation, and pursue solutions anchored on justice, mutual respect, and the rule of law,” he stated.

The former Anambra State governor also called on leaders and citizens of both countries to demonstrate responsible leadership, compassion, and restraint amid prevailing socio-economic pressures.

He emphasised the importance of peaceful conduct, respect for lawful institutions, and the rejection of violence, hate, and provocation in resolving grievances.

According to Obi, the future of Africa depends on unity, economic inclusion, community investment, and the protection of the dignity of all Africans regardless of where they reside on the continent.

He reiterated his commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence and stronger bilateral relations between Nigeria and South Africa.
