Lift Africa’s Justice Shield Secures 4 Convictions In Landmark Sexual Exploitation Cases In Kano

Lift Africa Foundation, through its Justice Shield legal intervention programme, has secured four landmark convictions in cases involving the sexual exploitation of minors in Kano State.

The cases were prosecuted through court proceedings in which Barrister Aisha Hamman, founder of Lift Africa Foundation, served as legal counsel representing the survivors under the Justice Shield programme, leading litigation that resulted in convictions and custodial sentences.

The Federal High Court in Kano delivered judgments in November 2024, affirming the guilt of the defendants and imposing custodial sentences ranging from two to seven years imprisonment, with several convictions issued without the option of fines.

These outcomes reinforced the role of sustained legal representation in ensuring accountability for sexual and gender-based violence and strengthening access to justice for survivors.

Barrister Hamman noted that the judgements reflected the importance of effective legal support systems for survivors navigating the justice process.

“These cases demonstrate the critical importance of legal representation in ensuring that survivors are heard and that the justice system delivers accountability for sexual exploitation,” she said.

The convictions were secured under relevant provisions of the Penal Code Law applicable in Kano State.
