The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 40-year-old suspected serial killer, Mr. Akaniyene Eretus, in Creek Town Forest, Odukpani Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Sunday Akata, disclosed this on a WhatsApp platform on Friday, noting that the suspect was arrested following intelligence-led operations linked to a series of disappearances and killings in the area.

It was gathered that Eretus, an indigene of Obot Akara, was tracked to an isolated hut he allegedly constructed deep inside the forest in Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community of Creek Town.

Security operatives, including troops of the Nigerian Army and a tactical police squad, reportedly stormed the location with support from community youths and traditional leaders after credible intelligence pointed to the suspect’s hideout.

On sighting the operatives, the suspect allegedly attempted to escape and retrieve a weapon but was quickly surrounded and overpowered before being taken into custody.

A search of the premises reportedly led to the discovery of multiple shallow graves within the compound. Security sources said about eight graves were uncovered, with remains believed to belong to several victims buried without their heads.

Investigators also alleged that plantain crops had been planted over the graves, a move suspected to have been used to conceal the crime for an extended period.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to the killing of about 30 persons in the community who had previously been reported missing. He was said to have led operatives to the site where the bodies were exhumed.

He also reportedly admitted that the most recent killing, which triggered his arrest, took place on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, allegedly with the assistance of a female accomplice who “held the victim’s head” during the attack.

According to him, the suspect said the woman was used to lure victims, though investigators are still working to verify the claims.

The case reportedly came to light after residents heard screams during the last incident and raised alarm. The matter was subsequently reported to the Odukpani Local Government Council by community leaders, prompting swift security intervention.

The Council Chairman, Mr. Ukpong Etim Asido, was said to have immediately alerted security agencies, leading to a coordinated response by police and military personnel.

Community leaders, including councillors and youth representatives, have commended the swift action of security operatives, which led to the arrest of the suspect and his alleged accomplice, 35-year-old Miss Uduak Essien.

The police confirmed that both suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue into the alleged serial killings and the circumstances surrounding the discoveries.
