A non-governmental organization, Alternative Livelihood Initiative (ALI), has been launched in Nigeria with a commitment to improve livelihoods and expand economic opportunities for women, youths and vulnerable communities across the country.

The organisation unveiled its flagship programme, Advancing Sustainable Communities through Enterprise, Nutrition and Livelihood Diversification (ASCEND), during the launch yesterday in Abuja attended by stakeholders from the agriculture, nonprofit, academic, private sector and government sectors.

ALI said the initiative was established to tackle persistent socio-economic challenges confronting vulnerable populations, including poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, poor market access, climate vulnerability, and social exclusion.

Team lead, Dr. Theophilus Agada, said the organisation was committed to empowering women, youths, smallholder farmers, persons with disabilities, and marginalised groups with the skills and resources needed to achieve sustainable livelihoods.

“At ALI, our goal is to create pathways for vulnerable populations to achieve sustainable livelihoods, build resilience against future shocks, and participate meaningfully in economic growth and development,” Agada said.
