Nollywood actor Jide Awobona has addressed the criticism he received after deleting a video he shared about the state of insecurity in Nigeria.

The actor explained that he removed the video because he felt overwhelmed and emotional about the security challenges affecting citizens.

In a social media post, Awobona stated that many people judged his reaction without knowing the personal struggles he deals with. He emphasised that the country’s insecurity continues to affect him deeply.

“Behind many smiles are pains you may never see. That is why we must be careful not to judge a book by its cover.”

Awobona noted that he has consistently used his platform to speak out against national tragedies, including the recent abduction of teachers and school pupils in Oyo State. He shared that having personally experienced a robbery in the past made him understand the anger and frustration felt by many Nigerians.

The actor appealed to the public to show empathy rather than attacking one another during difficult times.

“This is not the time to attack fellow Nigerians. This is not the time to tell others how they should react to tragedy, loss, fear, or frustration.”

Responding to critics who questioned his recent participation in the Ojude Oba cultural festival despite the national situation, Awobona explained that public figures also experience fear and grief, and often use work and community activities to manage the ongoing stress. He added that past national tragedies still affect his peace of mind.

“A lot of us have forgotten about the Chibok girls, I haven’t, I’m still traumatised, trying to distract myself with work and other activities to be sane at least.”
