Italy has celebrated the 80th anniversary of its Republic, reaffirming its commitment to democracy, gender equality, international cooperation and global peace, while pledging to deepen ties with Nigeria and support the country’s development aspirations.

Speaking during a reception to commemorate Italian Republic Day, marking the period from 2 June 1946 to 2 June 2026 in Abuja on Tuesday, the Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Roberto Mengoni, reflected on Italy’s journey from the devastation of war to becoming a modern democratic state.

Mengoni said the anniversary was an emotional milestone and highlighted the values that have shaped Italy over the past eight decades.

He recalled that in 1946, Italians voted to establish a republic following the end of the Second World War, rejecting fascism, colonialism, oppression and aggressive nationalism.

According to him, the decision laid the foundation for an open and inclusive society built on freedom, equality and responsible citizenship.

The ambassador cited Article 3 of the Italian Constitution, which guarantees equal social dignity and equality before the law regardless of gender, race, language, religion, political opinion or social condition.

Speaking on Italy’s progress, Mengoni said the country had evolved into a vibrant democracy where citizens enjoy freedom of expression and participation.

“Italy has become a truly democratic and free country. It is richer, more united and inclusive. It is part of the European Union and an international community built on cooperation and solidarity,” he said.

He noted that solidarity remains a defining principle of Italian society, extending support to the elderly, children, the sick, refugees and migrants.

The ambassador also highlighted the significant role women have played in shaping modern Italy.

“Italian women reclaimed their dignity and position in society. They fought prejudice and transformed the country through their determination.

“When women commit to change, their victories are victories for the whole society,” he added.

On relations with Nigeria, Mengoni said Italy has played a significant role in the country’s development through decades of economic cooperation and investment.

He acknowledged the contributions of Italian firms that have operated in Nigeria over the years, including Salini, B-Stabilini, Cappa & D’Alberto and Orobica and others.

The envoy expressed optimism that recent efforts by the Nigerian government to resolve longstanding issues involving ENI would encourage increased Italian investment and strengthen bilateral economic relations.

“We hope that more Italian companies and people will come to Nigeria to foster economic, commercial and social relations. The Embassy is ready to assist them all,” he said.

Mengoni also pledged Italy’s continued support for Nigeria’s democracy, security and development, irrespective of religious or ethnic differences.

He also recognised the contribution of Nigerians living in Italy, noting that approximately 132,000 Nigerians were legally resident in the country as of 2025.
