The New York Knicks erased a 14-point deficit in the third quarter to stun the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 on the road in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
Jalen Brunson poured in 13 of his game-high 30 points in the final frame, igniting a decisive 11-0 spurt inside the last two minutes that broke open a tight contest.
The victory extended the Knicks’ winning streak to 12 games, tying the second-longest postseason run in league history—a mark originally set by the Spurs back in 1999. That same year, San Antonio defeated New York in the Finals, the Knicks’ most recent appearance in the championship series.
This postseason, New York has now rallied from double-digit second-half deficits four times, including a remarkable 22-point comeback against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals opener.
Seeking their first title since 1973, the Knicks credited their resilient fan base for fueling the turnaround. “It’s something in the city—you feel that energy,” said Karl-Anthony Towns, who finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
“The grit, the grind, the hard work it takes to make it here… I think we reflect our fans and their lifestyles every time we step on the court in a Knicks jersey.”
Spurs star Victor Wembanyama had a quiet night by his standards, managing just six made field goals on 21 attempts to finish as the team’s leading scorer.
“I’ve been down in a series before—never in the Finals—but I’m not kicking myself,” Wembanyama said. “I was bad. It’s not more complicated than that. I’m not worried in the slightest.”
Game 2 remains in San Antonio on Friday, with the series shifting to Madison Square Garden for Game 3 on Monday.
