The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) President, Engineer Habu Gumel, has assured the Association of Retired Sports Men and Women in Nigeria (RENISA) of unwavering support, emphasising that former national representatives deserve the utmost respect and care.

During a meeting with RENISA’s delegation, led by former athlete Sunday Adeleye, Gumel lauded the association as a vital platform for retired sports personalities. He acknowledged the struggles many ex-athletes face post-retirement, often lacking financial security and adequate support.

“Many of these retired sports men and women are suffering,” Gumel stated, pledging the NOC’s commitment to assist RENISA in securing private sector contributions and government backing. He highlighted that RENISA’s establishment is enshrined in the National Sports Commission (NSC) Act, affirming its legal recognition.

Adeleye, RENISA’s President, explained that the association, founded in 2019, aims to improve the lives of retired athletes who often struggle with financial hardship and lack of future planning after their sporting careers conclude. He announced RENISA’s inaugural Sports Fiesta, scheduled for 17th-26th September 2027 in Abuja, featuring 17 sports. This event seeks to foster camaraderie and provide awards to sports contributors.

Both parties stressed their partnership in progress, with RENISA aiming to complement the NOC and NSC’s efforts in supporting Nigerian sports at all levels.
