Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has congratulated Daily Times on the occasion of its milestone centenary anniversary celebration.

The council urged media organisations and journalists to recommit themselves to the principles of truth, fairness, accuracy and ethical conduct as the media industry continues to evolve.

Ike made the call in a statement to commemorate the entenary celebration of Daily Times Nigeria.

Congratulating the management and staff of the newspaper on its 100th anniversary, the NUJ chairman described the milestone as a testament to resilience, relevance and dedicated service to both the Nigerian nation and the journalism profession.

“One hundred years is not just a number; it is a testimony to resilience, relevance and service to the Nigerian nation and to the media profession,” she said.

According to her, Daily Times has played a historic role in shaping public opinion, promoting democratic values and strengthening journalism practice in Nigeria over the decades.

She noted that the newspaper’s legacy remains a major reference point in the history of the Nigerian press, adding that the institution’s longevity reflects the sacrifices, courage and professionalism of generations of journalists who sustained it through different eras.

Ike said the centenary celebration presents an opportunity not only to celebrate the achievements of one of Nigeria’s oldest media institutions but also to reflect on the responsibilities journalists bear in society.

“For us in the NUJ, this celebration is also a call to reflection. It reminds us of the responsibility we bear as journalists to uphold truth, fairness, accuracy and ethical conduct in our work,” she said.

She stressed that credible journalism has become even more important at a time when the media landscape is undergoing rapid transformation driven by technological advancements and the growing influence of digital platforms.

The NUJ chairman commended Daily Times for commencing its centenary activities with a press conference, describing the media as a critical instrument for public enlightenment and national development.

She urged the organisation to use the celebration not only to reflect on its illustrious past but also to chart a path for future growth through innovation and adherence to professional standards.

“We urge the organisation to use this centenary not only to celebrate its glorious past, but also to renew its commitment to excellence, innovation and the highest standards of journalism,” she said.

Ike reaffirmed the commitment of the NUJ FCT Council to continue collaborating with institutions that have contributed significantly to the growth of journalism and the strengthening of democracy in Nigeria.
