Tottenham Hotspur have secured the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson following the left-back’s exit from Liverpool on a free transfer.

The 32-year-old defender, who had already confirmed he would be leaving Anfield when his contract expired at the end of the season, will officially join Spurs on July 1.

Under previous manager Thomas Frank, Tottenham had pursued Robertson during the January transfer window.

A fee was agreed with Liverpool, but the move collapsed after the Reds failed to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma.

Roberto de Zerbi, who took over as Tottenham boss late in the campaign, guided the club to Premier League survival on the final day with a victory over Everton.

“Andy is a player I have watched closely for years,” said De Zerbi. “He brings outstanding technique, vast experience, strong leadership, and the right mentality. He has won consistently at the elite level for a long time and will be a major figure for us on and off the pitch.”

Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 and went on to make 378 appearances, winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League, two League Cups, and an FA Cup. With 92 Scotland caps already, he is set to lead his country at this summer’s World Cup.

Tottenham’s sporting director, Johan Lange, added: “His ability, character, and leadership have been clear throughout a career defined by competing for and winning top trophies. Andy’s professionalism and dedication will also greatly help the development of our squad. He shares our hunger and ambition to bring success back to the club.”
