Super Eagles head coach, Éric Chelle, has defended his decision to introduce several new faces into the national team setup during the Unity Cup and the recent international friendly against Poland.

Chelle named eight Nigeria Premier Football League players in his squad for the Unity Cup invitational tournament, as part of efforts to broaden the team’s talent pool ahead of future competitions.

Several players, including Femi Azeez, Owen Oseni, Arthur Okonkwo and Rafiu Durosinmi, made their Super Eagles debuts during the tournament.

Meanwhile, Abdullahi Bewene earned his first senior international cap in Nigeria’s friendly against Poland, while Christian Akpan received a late call-up for the forthcoming friendly against Portugal.

The Malian tactician said the inclusion of new players forms part of a deliberate strategy to strengthen competition within the squad and improve overall quality.

“We have analysed our performances over the past year and have tried to bring in players who can help the team grow,” Chelle told the Super Eagles media team.

“We need to improve because, for me and for everyone, it is often the smallest details that make the difference between being the best team and winning a trophy.”

Chelle’s approach reflects his commitment to building a stronger and more competitive Super Eagles side as preparations continue for future international assignments.
