The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (EdoSUBEB), Hon. Ebanehita Sonia Omonzane, has emerged as a reform-driven leader transforming basic education across Edo State.

As a key contributor to the Shine Agenda of Governor Monday Okpebholo, her administration has advanced the Edushine initiative, an evolution of the EdoBEST Basic Education Reform Programme. The initiative has translated policy into measurable outcomes, including improved literacy and numeracy, enhanced teacher accountability, and expanded access to quality education across the state.

In recognition of her achievements, the Unveiling African Parliament Writers Network, in partnership with Parliamentary Initiatives at the ECOWAS Commission Annex, honoured her with the African Trailblazers Merit Award for Strategic Development in Governance.

The award citation commended her strategic leadership, institutional discipline, and commitment to the statutory mandate of EdoSUBEB. The network, comprising journalists from six African countries, also highlighted her administration’s emphasis on fairness, transparency, and results-oriented governance.

Nigeria’s basic education sector continues to face significant challenges, including declining learning outcomes, inadequate infrastructure, teacher shortages, and weak accountability systems. However, Hon. Omonzane’s approach offers a practical model for addressing these issues.

Under her leadership, EdoSUBEB has leveraged management information systems to support evidence-based decision-making, strengthened classroom monitoring, and expanded teacher capacity-building initiatives.

These efforts include training programmes for education managers and school leaders across Edo State’s three senatorial districts in areas such as Structured Pedagogy Practice, Digital Content Development, Track and Trace Systems, Agricultural Education Practices, Instructional Design, Environmental and Social Safeguarding, among others.

These targeted reforms have been made possible through the EduSHINE initiative championed by Governor Okpebholo. The programme has recorded tangible gains and attracted interest from stakeholders within and outside Nigeria.

Her work aligns with growing national calls to strengthen the teaching profession through strategic recruitment, competitive incentives, and continuous professional development. Education experts maintain that such measures are essential for attracting and retaining highly qualified educators.

As a woman leading a major public institution, Hon. Omonzane’s success also carries symbolic significance. Women remain underrepresented in senior public-sector leadership positions globally, and her accomplishments challenge long-standing stereotypes while inspiring a new generation of female leaders in public service.

Beyond the award, Hon. Omonzane will be featured in the inaugural edition of the African Trailblazers Magazine, which will spotlight her career journey, the EduSHINE model, lessons in educational governance, and strategies for scaling impact.

Among the key highlights of her reforms are data-driven pedagogy, continuous teacher development, clear accountability mechanisms, targeted support for underserved communities, and strong institutional discipline.

While Edo State’s education sector still faces challenges related to funding, infrastructure, and sustaining teacher motivation amid economic pressures, the progress achieved under the current administration has positioned the state as a model for educational reform.

Governor Monday Okpebholo has also been widely commended for supporting innovative educational initiatives and providing the necessary approvals and policy direction to drive meaningful change in the sector.

The recognition bestowed on Hon. Ebanehita Sonia Omonzane underscores the impact of strategic governance in delivering measurable improvements, even in resource-constrained environments. Her leadership offers a replicable roadmap for states seeking to translate education policy into sustainable results
