Bellingham Not Guaranteed England World Cup Start – Tuchel

England manager Thomas Tuchel has made it clear that Jude Bellingham will not be handed a automatic starting spot at the upcoming World Cup, as the squad’s depth has reached a level where “14 or 15 players” can legitimately claim a place in the first XI.

Since Tuchel took over in January 2025, the Real Madrid star has seen his role become less certain. While Bellingham featured prominently at Euro 2024, he has started only four matches under the new boss and come off the bench three more times, with injuries and fitness struggles disrupting his campaign.

Speaking to reporters, Tuchel emphasised that Bellingham remains part of his long-term vision, but insisted that competition for places is fiercer than ever.

According to BBC Sport, the German coach said: “Yes, he has a fight on his hands. He is one of the starters, he knows that, but we now have 14 or 15 potential starters in this group.”

Tuchel has instead placed growing trust in Morgan Rogers, who has emerged as one of England’s most reliable performers since the manager’s arrival. Rogers has featured in 12 of 13 matches under Tuchel and was the only player to play every minute of England’s eight World Cup qualifiers.

Still, Tuchel stressed that nothing is set in stone, with roles very much up for grabs ahead of the tournament. England’s enviable squad depth — particularly in midfield and attack — means the battle for starting spots will only intensify as the World Cup draws closer.

Encouragingly for England fans, Bellingham has shown signs of rediscovering his best form. After a spell of injury setbacks earlier in the year, Tuchel recently praised the midfielder’s energy and sharpness, noting that he had returned to a “sweet spot” both physically and mentally. Following a strong second-half display in a warm-up win over New Zealand — during which Bellingham briefly wore the captain’s armband — Tuchel also highlighted his “decisiveness and bite.”

Tuchel’s remarks reflect the balancing act facing England: blending high-profile talent with tactical consistency. Declan Rice, expected to remain vice-captain, offers further stability in a crowded midfield unit.
