Leaders of Umoke Kindred in Ofeke Azueke, Ndume Ibeku have staged a peaceful protest over an alleged encroachment on their land at Abia State House of Assembly Complex, Umuahia,
The leaders, who included Chiefs Chimobi Nwokocha, Kingsley Ogbonna and the women leader, Mrs Victoria Chinyere, named the said land as Alaoji Isiyi Oduakara.
According to them, “We came to seek the intervention of the House to stop the encroachment by some individuals in collaboration with people in government.”
Explaining that the land is used for farming, burial and building purposes, they noted that the community had in the past donated lands to the government for development purposes.
The leaders, who stressed that they are not opposed to development, expressed the hope that the House would find solutions to the “invasion of our land by the individuals and their collaborators”.
Responding, the speaker of the House, Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa assured them that the House would look into their complaints to ensure the issue is addressed appropriately.
Represented by the deputy speaker of the House, Hon Augustine Okezie, he thanked them for their peaceful disposition, adding that justice and equity would be applied to the matter.
His words: “Under the present administration in the state, no individual, group of persons, or community will be denied of their rights or dispossessed of their property.”
