Benue State governor Hyacinth Alia has signed the Benue State Electricity Bill 2026 into law, marking a major step in the state’s push to reform its power sector, expand access to electricity, and attract new investments.

Alia said the legislation would strengthen electricity generation, transmission, and distribution frameworks in the state, describing it as central to unlocking Benue’s economic potential.

According to him, the new law is designed to improve power supply reliability across the state while creating a more conducive environment for industrial growth and private-sector participation.

“The new law would improve electricity supply, stimulate economic growth, and enhance the quality of life of residents across the state,” the governor said.

He added that the framework would pave the way for more stable electricity for households, businesses, schools, hospitals, and other critical infrastructure, while reducing dependence on generators and fuel-powered alternatives.

The governor said the reform would also lower the cost of doing business in the state, noting that improved electricity access would help businesses reduce operational expenses and improve competitiveness.

He said the legislation contains provisions aimed at strengthening consumer protection, including fair billing practices, improved service delivery, prompt complaint resolution, and enhanced accountability from electricity providers.

“The law contains provisions to strengthen consumer protection through fair billing practices, improved service delivery, prompt resolution of complaints, and greater accountability from electricity providers,” he said.

Alia also highlighted rural electrification as a key component of the law, saying it would expand power access to underserved communities and deliver broad socio-economic benefits.

He noted that improved electricity supply would support healthcare delivery, education, agricultural processing, and security, while raising overall living standards across Benue State.
