A British man has been stabbed to death following what investigators described as an “extremely violent” confrontation involving a machete and a hammer in southern Spain.

The victim, believed to be between 60 and 70 years-old, was found dead inside a property in La Alcaidesa, a coastal residential area near Gibraltar popular with British expatriates.

According to local reports, the man was discovered lying in a pool of blood at about 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Spanish authorities have placed an Algerian man in his twenties under police watch at a hospital as part of ongoing investigations into the incident.

Detectives were working on the theory that the deceased and the younger man were involved in a violent altercation before the fatal stabbing occurred.

Investigators believed the suspect may have jumped from a nearby window or wall in an apparent suicide attempt after the incident. He was later found close to the property the two men were understood to have shared for approximately three years.

The suspect remained hospitalised, with authorities describing his injuries as non-life-threatening.

Police have yet to confirm whether he has been formally questioned.

Confirming the incident, a police spokesperson said: “An investigation is underway after a man was found dead at a property in La Alcaidesa.”

The spokesperson added that authorities are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death.

La Alcaidesa, located about 20 minutes from Gibraltar’s town centre, is known as a quiet residential community and a popular destination for British expatriates and holidaymakers.

The latest incident comes amid a series of deaths involving British nationals in Spain.

In May, a 64-year-old British pilgrim died after falling about 10 feet from a bridge made of tree trunks while walking along the famous Way of St James pilgrimage route.

The victim was reportedly heading to his hotel when he plunged into the Robo River in Puente la Reina, a town situated between Pamplona and Estella.

Emergency responders were alerted after a local resident discovered the body and contacted authorities. Despite efforts by paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Spanish authorities have launched separate investigations into both incidents.
