The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has directed senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to adopt proactive, intelligence-driven and adaptive policing strategies to address the country’s evolving security challenges.

He issued the directive during the monthly conference of strategic senior officers held on Tuesday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Disu said Nigeria continues to face multiple security threats, including kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence, terrorism, banditry, farmer-herder clashes and cyber-enabled crimes, stressing the need for stronger coordination and operational efficiency.

According to him, the police must remain ahead of criminal elements through improved intelligence gathering and effective response mechanisms.

The IGP disclosed that since the last conference in May 2026, the Force recorded several operational gains, including the arrest of eight suspected terrorists, 55 kidnapping suspects, 65 armed robbery suspects, 29 murder suspects and 42 suspected cultists.

He added that 88 kidnapped victims were rescued during various operations, while officers recovered 114 firearms, 843 rounds of ammunition and 28 stolen vehicles.

Disu also directed Commissioners of Police across the country to deepen community policing, intensify intelligence gathering and strengthen engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups and other community stakeholders.

He emphasized that public trust and collaboration remain essential to effective policing and sustainable crime prevention.

Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to professionalism and accountability, the IGP urged senior officers to lead by example, enforce discipline and prioritize personnel welfare in the discharge of their duties.
