Replacing Service Chiefs Won’t End Insecurity — Ex-Defence Spokesman Enenche

A former Coordinator of Defence Media Operations, Major General John Enenche (retd.), has said that changing Nigeria’s service chiefs will not provide a lasting solution to the country’s deep-rooted security challenges.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, the retired army officer reacted to renewed calls for the resignation of security chiefs over the persistent threats of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.

His comments followed an appeal by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, who urged President Bola Tinubu to give security chiefs a 90-day ultimatum to eliminate terrorists or step down.

Adeboye, speaking at a workers’ meeting at the Redemption Camp in May, expressed concern over the worsening security situation, stressing the need for stronger accountability and urgent action.

Responding, Enenche argued that frequent leadership changes in the military have not produced better security outcomes, insisting that such moves are not the solution.

“People may be thinking the service chiefs are not working, but I can tell you that changing service chiefs every six months or every year is not the solution at all,” he said.

He maintained that Nigeria’s security crisis requires a sustained and coordinated strategy rather than reactions driven by public pressure or frustration.

The retired general urged Nigerians to treat insecurity as a collective national challenge and support ongoing efforts to defeat criminal groups.

He warned that without long-term and decisive measures, the country’s security problems could persist across successive administrations.
