Serena Williams made a triumphant return to competitive tennis on Tuesday night, rolling back the years with a commanding doubles victory at Queen’s Club after an absence of 1,375 days from the sport.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion delighted a packed Andy Murray Arena as she partnered Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko to a stunning 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 victory over third seeds Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.

The win marked Williams’ first competitive success since her farewell appearance at the 2022 US Open, where she appeared to bring the curtain down on one of the most celebrated careers in sporting history.

Instead, the 44-year-old produced a performance that suggested she still has plenty to offer on the court.

Speaking after the match, Williams admitted she thoroughly enjoyed her return.

“It was so fun,” she said. “I had so much fun playing with Victoria. She really held up the team and played big on the big points. I could rely on her.

“We have never played together, but it felt so natural.”

Asked what inspired her return after nearly four years away from competitive action, Williams responded with characteristic humour.

“I had nothing better to do. I got tired of sitting at home,” she joked.

“My kids are out of school for the summer, so why not?

“I never got to play here; it was always just the men. It feels really special to play somewhere so iconic.”

The atmosphere at Queen’s reflected the significance of the occasion, with fans filling every available seat to witness the return of one of tennis’ most iconic figures.

Speculation about a comeback had intensified over the past year after Williams re-entered tennis’ anti-doping testing programme and later appeared on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s reinstatement list. However, confirmation only arrived last week when organisers announced she would compete in doubles alongside 19-year-old Mboko.

Williams insisted before the tournament that she had “nothing to prove”, revealing that one of her biggest motivations was allowing her daughters to watch her compete.

Eight-year-old Olympia and three-year-old Adira were among the spectators, cheering enthusiastically from the stands alongside their father as Williams showcased flashes of the brilliance that defined her illustrious career.

There were early signs of rustiness when her opening volley found the net, prompting brief questions about whether the former world number one could still perform at the highest level.

Those doubts quickly disappeared.

As the match progressed, Williams’ trademark power and court presence returned. Her booming serve, long regarded as one of the most formidable weapons in women’s tennis, proved decisive as she and Mboko seized control before cruising to victory.

Ninety-two minutes after stepping back onto a competitive court, Williams had secured a memorable comeback win, providing a reminder of why she remains one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen.
