United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino has delivered a candid assessment of American football culture, warning that misplaced confidence and unrealistic expectations could hinder the country’s progress on the global stage.

In a revealing interview with Spanish newspaper El País, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain manager questioned what he described as an attitude of “arrogance” surrounding football in the United States.

Pochettino argued that while footballing powers such as Spain, Argentina, England and France have earned the right to display confidence because of their achievements in the sport, the same cannot yet be said of the United States.

“I accept the arrogance of Spain, Argentina, England and France,” Pochettino said. “But when I see arrogance in the United States, I think there is a bit of confusion.”

The Argentine tactician suggested that many Americans assume success in football should naturally follow the nation’s dominance in sports such as basketball, ice hockey and athletics.

“There is often a belief that because the United States is successful in other sports, it should automatically be among the best in football,” he explained. “But football does not work like that.”

Pochettino stressed that his priority is not merely to chase short-term success at the World Cup but to help build a realistic and sustainable football culture capable of producing long-term results.

He said the challenge facing American football is to align expectations with reality and continue developing the structures necessary to compete consistently with the world’s elite nations.

His comments come as the United States prepares to launch its World Cup campaign under intense public scrutiny and heightened expectations as one of the tournament’s host nations.

While some observers may view Pochettino’s remarks as controversial, others have praised his honesty, arguing that genuine progress can only be achieved through a clear understanding of where the national team currently stands.
